Online relationship advice about starting a relationship with someone online

Here is a question I got from one of the visitors to this site:

Hi Paul.. what Do I Do... I really need some online relationship advice and by that I mean... I Met a Guy Online.. Discovered that he's a Christian... I've even been on his Church Website/In America, I live in the United Kingdom. Paul I Feel That me & This Guy are meant to be. I Like Him so much. But How Do We both Meet Together? As I don't believe in Online dating/arrangements? is there a way 4 both of us..?

Answer

With regards to online relationship advice and starting a relationship online, there are a few things to consider:

1. Its really hard to know someone online because you dont really get to see their character and you cant be sure that they are genuine, its hard to make a real judgement about someone you havent physically met, so the danger is that you begin to fantasise and create an illusion of this person based on the picture they have painted for you and based on what you think they will be like. Even if you've seen pictures you cant be sure that's who they really are because they could be using someone elses identity. Thats the danger of meeting someone online.

2. Its possible that it is meant to be, but you have to really pray and ask God to reveal his will. Dont get carried away, stay in control of your emotions and even if you feel yourself falling for him make sure you keep your spirit of desernment sharpe.

3. If things do work out, it will either end up being a long distance relationship or one of you will have to rellocate. Are you ready for that?

4. In the event that you decide to meet, let him be the one to travel to you, if he likes you that much then let him make the sacrifice to come and see you and if he does come make sure you take him to your pastor. If he wont meet your pastor then maybe he has something to hide, and if he wont make the sacrifice to come and see you then maybe he's not that serious. If he has sort God and is convinced that you are meant to be then he'll do what it takes.

5. Dont make it too easy for him even if you like him, no financial assistance at this stage even if it's to help him with travel expenses to come and see you. Let him make the sacrifices and show you that he is serious, he has to know that he has to work for you because you are not cheap (Remember how hard Jacob worked for Rachael he even got deceived by Laban in the process but he didnt give up until Rachel was his wife, that's true commitment and that shows a heart thats really serious and convinced that he had found his wife)
