This article was written as a reply to a question I received through my facebook page on an issue relating to sex and the bible. The exact question is as follows:

Question:

I was with a partner for 25 years. We never got married. We ended up having 2 children together, and yes I did want to get married, but he was to immature and flirtatious with others..He ended up leaving last year and meeting and now engaged to another woman, and talking about getting married next year.

I still care about his spiritual wellness, though he is not a Christian and nor is she...I have prayed for him, but wonder, I know he is having sex, with his partner, with regards to sex and the bible, would it make a difference to his spiritual soul, if he eventually gets married to her.

Answer:

The nature of sex and the bible perspective on it is that it is a matter of the spirit and the soul, there are spiritual implications to sleeping with someone, its not just a physical thing as most people think, it is the binding together of two souls and that's why Gods intention is that you only sleep with someone you are married to because sex and the bible view of people having sex is that it is the fusing together of two souls or as the bible would put it, two become one flesh.

Whenever you sleep with someone, there is a part of you that remains with them (even scientists have proven this) that's why its hard to get over someone you have slept with, especially someone you have slept with repeatedly because in essence you have become one with that person and having a child together is the manifestation of that one flesh - i.e the two of you deposited in the child you produced together.

That's why even when two people who never got married but have been sleeping together for a long time break up, it is just as bad as divorce and just as painful because it is the ripping apart of two souls.

So in answer to your question, Having sex with his partner would definitely make a difference to his soul because whether he likes it or not, part of his soul is still tied to you and part of yours to his (unless the soul tie has been broken through prayer) in essence a part of his soul is with you and a part with this new partner and pieces of it with anyone else he might have slept with. It then becomes difficult for him to give himself completely and totally to the person he is with because his soul is all over the place - In other words, its possible for him to physically be with her but his mind is with you, why? because you have a part of his soul.

Sex and the bible take on it is literally a fusing together of two souls, once the two people have been united in such a way, they should never be able to separate like you can’t separate sand from salt if you mix the two together and that’s why sex and the bible take on sex is that it is only for married people and once those people marry they should never separate “what God has joined together, let no man put asunder” It’s almost like he is splitting himself all over the place (that's the best way I can explain it) and it then becomes difficult for him to find spiritual wholeness and I believe that this is part of what David was talking about in Psalms 23 when he makes reference to the restoration of his soul "he leads me beside the still waters... he restores my soul"

We have to be careful when it comes to matters of the spirit and the soul. When David messed up with Beersheba and committed adultery with her, even though he eventually married her, their union gave birth to probably the most promiscuous man that ever lived (Solomon). They had deposited in Solomon that sexually promiscuous part of their soul and it became multiplied in their offspring.

This is why the bible warns us again sexual immorality in 1 Corinthians 6:18 "anyone who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body" in order words you are messing up yourself, your soul and spirit, you are making the DNA of your spirit defective and will transfer that defect on to your children, that's why the bible says that God visits the sins of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation (Exodus 34:7).

So as you can see there are serious implications for having sex outside of the boundaries God created and unless he submits his life to God and allow God to restore him and forgive him and give him a new life and restore his soul and spirit, not only is his soul at stake but also the destiny of his offspring.
